Throughout history, women’s voices have often been forced into silence. Yet silence itself can send a loud and clear message. It is this concept- the voice of a silent force- that Wan has chosen to portray through the assemblage of hundreds of rusted bells that have been coated with wax so that they no longer make any sound. This simple yet sophisticated notion intrigues the artist, allowing her to instinctively express the overwhelming sensation of hidden voices that have been forced into silence but still retain a pure, untouched inner presence that echoes throughout the silent bells.
